About the Artist
Jildsaaz works at the intersection of play, art, culture, and heritage, reimagining and reviving traditional practices through contemporary forms. A name drawn from the Persian-Urdu word jild, meaning skin or cover, and jildsaaz, the artisan who binds books, a preserver of pages, a keeper of stories. Jildsaaz believes that arts, culture, games, and traditional practices are the binding threads of our collective experience. They hold us when life frays at the edges, becoming the covers of our stories.
Drawing from the Mewar School of Miniature Painting, Jildsaaz’s works aim to revive the long-established practice of making hand-drawn, culturally embedded board games. The hand-painted board works both as an artwork and a playable surface. In doing so, they blur the boundary between object and experience, restoring a slower, more tactile relationship with play. Each board is unique and variations inherent to the process ensure that no two pieces are alike. Minute variations in line and form, often effaced in mechanical reproduction, are retained as evidence of process. These nuances highlight the workʼs singularity and artisanal integrity, marking the time and labour that goes into making the boards.
